The Garden District is a area located in the middle of Baton Rouge that is very rich in history. The Garden District is made up of three parts: Roseland Terrace, Kleinert Place and Drehr Place. This area centers around the intersection of Park Boulevard and Government Street and includes many historic, iconic Baton Rouge homes. It’s one of the most distinct areas of Baton Rouge dating back to the early 1900s. Shaded with tons of live Oak Trees this area gives charm unlike any other neighborhood in Baton Rouge. This area makes up over 1.7 square miles of mid city Baton Rouge.

Roseland Terrace was the first district in Baton Rouge and construction started in 1911. These first homes were built in the Queen Anne Colonial style which was popular during that time.  There were also many bungalows that were constructed toward the end of construction in this area, which didn’t happen until the 1930’s.

Kleinert Place began construction in 1927 and makes up 60 acres of the Garden District. Drehr Place started construction in 1919 and is the smallest of the areas making up the Garden District at 37 acres. Below is a list of parades and other options for those looking to have a great time celebrating Mardi Gras.

Baton Rouge Mardi Gras Festival – Come to the 2016 Baton Rouge Mardi Gras Festival! Starting at 10AM on February 6th, the party will continue till 6PM. This celebration will be located at North Boulevard Town Square. With live music, exhibits, food, krewes, and other festivities, you will not be disappointed with this year’s Baton Rouge Mardi Gras Festival!!!

Krewe of Artemis – Looking to celebrate Mardi Gras 2016 in Baton Rouge? The festivities start on Friday, January 29th at 7PM. This first celebration hosts the first Baton Rouge Parade, The Krewe of Artemis. This parade will begin on the intersection of Government Street at St. Philip Street and will make a large loop around Baton Rouge. Be ready to catch the iconic high heeled shoe, float beads, items which will light up the night, footballs, tambourines, and more. If you are looking for a family friendly option, wait till the following Friday – the Krewe of Southdowns or the next day at the Krewe of Mystique de la Capitale.

Krewe of Mystique de la Capitale – This parade will be held on the 30th of January. This Saturday parade will begin at 2PM and will be celebrating its 38th year in Baton Rouge as the city’s oldest parade group. This parade will have just under 15 floats and several marching bands. Many local businesses join forces to make this parade memorable for the whole family.

Krewe of Orion – Come to downtown Baton Rouge at 6:30PM on January 30th to see the Krewe of Orion Parade. This parade is also family friendly and will feature many beautifully lit and colorful parade floats, costumed characters, amazing masks, and parade throws such as footballs, medals, cups, beads, and more! This parade features a large marching band with several smaller bands dispursed amongst the floats. You will not want to miss this year’s Krewe of Orion Parade which begins on Government Street.

Caaws Mystic Krewe of Mutts – This Parade will be held on Sunday at 2PM at North Boulevard Street. This is also a family friendly parade where people of all ages can come enjoy the Mardi Gras celebrations. This year the parade will have a “Star Wars” theme. As you might have guessed from the name, dog lovers in particular will love this celebration of Mardi Gras as the floats are sized for pets. This parade will start on North Boulevard and St. Ferdinand Street. Krewe of Southdowns – Looking to celebrate a little closer to Mardi Gras? Krewe of Southdowns will be parading the streets of Baton Rouge – specifically the Southdowns neighborhoods beginning at Glasgow Middle School. This is a family friendly parade, so be sure to bring the whole crew to see this parade starting at 7PM on Friday, February 5th.

Krewe of Good Friends of the Oaks – on Sunday the 7th, starting at 2PM, this parade will start at LA-1 and Oaks Ave. This parade will be celebrating Port Allen’s 100 years and will include music, local festivals, and icons of Port Allen.
